چکیده

I if When I visited the hospital I knew that the birth had taken place about a week before, so I went prepared to see an almost completely recovered young mother, to admire the baby and chat hilariously about the shocks and indignities of the labour ward. It was normal visiting hours so it did not occur to me to ask a nurse if I could see her. Knowing the number of her room, I went straight up to the door and raised my hand to knock. Then I heard a low but quite desperate sobbing, which to my horror stopped on a catching of the breath and turned to a crescendo of screams that pealed down the corridor and brought a staff nurse hurrying to push me out of the way and close the door behind her. For a moment I caught sight of my friend's face, distraught and terrified, eyes screwed up tight.

Clashes of consensus: on the problem of both justifying abortion of fetuses with Down syndrome and rejecting infanticide

Although the abortion of fetuses with Down syndrome has become commonplace, infanticide is still widely rejected. Generally, there are three ways of justifying the differentiation between abortion and infanticide: by referring to the differences between the moral status of the fetus versus the infant, by referring to the differences of the moral status of the act of abortion versus the act of i...

Infanticide and moral consistency.

The aim of this essay is to show that there are no easy options for those who are disturbed by the suggestion that infanticide may on occasion be morally permissible. Any set of beliefs about the morality of abortion, infanticide and...

Impact of Male Infanticide on the Social Structure of Mountain Gorillas

Infanticide can be a major influence upon the social structure of species in which females maintain long-term associations with males. Previous studies have suggested that female mountain gorillas benefit from residing in multimale groups because infanticide occurs when one-male groups disintegrate after the dominant male dies. Here we measure the impact of infanticide on the reproductive succe...

Female Resistance to Invading Males Increases Infanticide in Langurs

BACKGROUND Infanticide by adult male occurs in many mammalian species under natural conditions, and it is often assumed to be a goal-directed action and explained predominately by sexual selection. Motivation of this behavior in mammals is limitedly involved. METHODOLOGY AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS We used long-term reproductive records and direct observation in captivity and in the field of two s...

Evolution of social monogamy in primates is not consistently associated with male infanticide.

Comparative analyses suggest that monogamous breeding systems evolved in mammals where feeding competition reduces range overlap between breeding females, preventing males from guarding more than one female at a time (1). In contrast, a recent analysis for primates suggests that monogamy evolved as a form of paternal care that reduces the risk of male infanticide (2). Here we reexamine the dist...
